Dr. Welmerink graduated from the University of Michigan Dental School in 1973. He practiced general dentistry for five years with the United States Public Health Service, Indian Health Division. At that time, he returned to the University of Michigan to continue his education with specialty training in orthodontics. After completing his two-year residency training in 1980, he returned to the Public Health Service, serving two years as Orthodontic Consultant for the seven Indian Health Clinics in the Arizona/Nevada area. In September 1982, he opened his private practice in Sparks.

He has served as Secretary/Treasurer, Vice President and President of the Northern Nevada Dental Society and is a member in good standing of the American Association of Orthodontists.

The Welmerink family includes his wife, Cris, and their four children.
